 Harvey L. Herer of Jupiter, FL, Chairman and co-owner of The ABC Companies and a long-time resident of Buffalo, NY, died Friday in Hospice of Palm Beach Gardens after a lengthy illness. He was 78 years old.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, Mr. Herer moved with his family to Buffalo in 1939 in order for his father to accept a position with the American Bureau of Collections, Inc. In 1954, upon the death of his father, Mr. Herer withdrew from the University of Buffalo to fill his father’s position as Office Manager with the small company. Six years later, Mr. Herer and a partner bought the business from the company founder.
Through the years Mr. Herer oversaw the company’s expansion and diversification, establishing offices in California as well as Europe and Asia. Under Mr. Herer, ABC became a leader in the use of technology for commercial collections, and in handling international commercial cases.
Mr. Herer built the business on the concept that quality service means helping customers in their own pursuit of excellence, and was a driving force in expanding the company’s services into global markets.
The President of the United States, twice recognized The ABC Company’s prominence in International business – the second time in a special White House Rose Garden ceremony in 1990, where President George H.W. Bush personally presented Mr. Herer with the “E Star” Award.
Mr. Herer was a China enthusiast whose first visit to China in 1980 convinced him that the country would someday become a major market for his company’s services. Through the years he worked on behalf of many Chinese enterprises, visiting the country dozens of times and dining with former Chinese President Jiang Zemin during the latter’s first official visit to the US.
Throughout his life, Mr. Herer was active in numerous professional and civic organizations and was an important contributor to various charities in Buffalo, NY and Palm Beach County, FL. He was particularly proud of his service for many years on the Board of the Leukemia Society of Western New York.
Mr. Herer was greatly loved and respected by all at The ABC Companies who had the privilege of knowing him. His energy and commitment will be missed.
